Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Job Summary
Responsible for providing standard paramedical technical assistance and service in a courteous and professional manner in the Large Animal Clinic of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and may be asked to assist in other areas of the veterinary teaching hospital as well. Will receive training and learn specialized paramedical procedures and protocols related to the EQMS and FARMS sections, which includes working with a variety of animal species such as cattle, horses, pigs, sheep, goats, poultry, camelids and cervids. Due to the teaching emphasis of the hospital, will assist in the training of veterinary students.
Duties & Responsibilities
Learn to provide standard paramedical technical assistance, nursing care and instruction in a professional and courteous manner:
? Restrain patients as requested and perform basic paramedical technical procedures under direction of a veterinarian.
? Administer and dispense medication, fluids, etc., under the direction of a veterinarian.
? Assist veterinary staff and students with patient treatments.
? Collect and submit blood, urine, fecal, milk and other biological samples. Inoculate prepackaged media.
? Remove and apply bandages as directed.
? Prepare animals and equipment, set up, assist, demonstrate, and clean up after common procedures, such as ultrasonography, breeding soundness evaluations, jugular catheterization, etc.
? Perform a variety of in-house diagnostic tests.
? Recognize and report emergency conditions.
Learn the patient admission and discharge, client communications and record keeping processes:
? Assist in the admission and discharge of patients.
? Enter clinical signs, treatments, and other information in the medical records in the Health Information System under direction of a staff veterinarian.
? Assist with follow up client communications regarding the patient’s progress after being discharged.
? Enter supplies used and procedures performed on patients into Health Information System.
Learn to clean, maintain and stock work areas and equipment
? Clean, supply and maintain treatment rooms, exam areas, laboratories, surgical areas, storerooms, and rounds areas as per regulatory requirements.
? Operate, clean, monitor and provide routine maintenance of equipment and instruments used within the section such as steam, H2O2, and ethylene oxide sterilizers.
? Inventory and maintain drugs and other supplies.
Learn to teach professional students
? May assist the LAC staff in setting up laboratories and to assist students in laboratory procedures.
? May assist in the training of veterinary technician students.
? Perform other duties as assigned
Additional Physical Demands
An environment of stress may be anticipated. The person in this position must be capable of reliably functioning in such an area. The amount of physical exertion will vary with assignments. For example, the technician may be engaged in safely lifting 45-pound fluid containers. Some strength and considerable caution are required when working with a large animal (i.e., cattle and horses) during diagnostic or surgical procedures; the technician may restrain a foal or calf on the ground. The handling of any animal presents some element of risk or injury. Some strength and considerable caution are required when working with animals during diagnostic or surgical procedures. To some degree, unpleasantness may be experienced under such conditions. This position entails operating e uipment, administering medications, and restraining animals of various species for examination. Exposure to anesthetic agents may present a potential hazard. An ability to work in the presence of animal waste and fluids, syringes, needles, and medications are potentially dangerous and must be used with care. Persons allergic to animal dander, dust, pollen, hay, etc., may experience discomfort in this position. Work involving animals with various disease states may expose the individual to viral, bacterial, and fungal agents known to be transmissible to man. Exposure to chemicals and anesthetic waste gases may be potentially hazardous if mishandled or misused.
Minimum Qualifications
Successful completion or current enrollment in the final semester of a veterinary technology program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
Must obtain CVT license within 6 months of employment
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Illinois Veterinary Technician Certification must be maintained throughout employment.
Familiar with federal regulations and university and hospital polices regarding the use and handling of controlled substances.
Familiar with regulations related to use of drugs in food animal species including the need for milk and meat withholding times and limitations or prohibitions on the use of some drugs.
Able to handle large animals and attend to their needs.
